This is the first time Russia is hosting the Winter Olympics.This is the 22nd Winter Olympics.

Sochi, considered the longest city in Europe (approximately 148 kilometers or 92 miles), is a resort city in the Krasnodar Krai territory. Sochi’s population is approximately 400,000.
Ice events will be held in a “cluster” near the Black Sea in the Imeretinskaya Valley.The second “cluster” will be for skiing and sliding Events and will be held in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains.

1,300 medals are to be awarded in Sochi. This, according to the official Sochi 2014 website, is a record high.
The main design feature is a “Patchwork Quilt”— depicting a mosaic of national designs from the various cultures and ethnic groups that make up the Russian Federation, according to the Sochi Olympics organizing committee.
The design also depicts the varied landscape of Sochi, with the sun’s rays reflecting through a prism of snowy mountain tops onto the beaches of the Black Sea coast.
