Facts about Sochi Winter Olympics 2014, Russia

This is the first time Russia is hosting the Winter Olympics.This is the 22nd Winter Olympics.

The Olympics games are being held from February 7th– 23rd, 2014.

The Paralympic Games will be held from March 7th -16th, 2014.

Sochi, considered the longest city in Europe (approximately 148 kilometers or 92 miles), is a    resort city in the Krasnodar Krai  territory.  Sochi’s population is approximately 400,000.

Ice events will be held in a “cluster” near the Black Sea in the Imeretinskaya Valley.The second “cluster” will be for skiing and sliding Events and will be held in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains.

The 2014 Sochi Olympics are estimated to be the costliest ever, at $51 billion beating the Beijing Summer Games ($46.5 billion).

Sochi Olympic torch was carried by 14,000 bearers on foot, bus, plane and many other forms of transportation over 65,000 Kilometers for 123 days across 2,900 cities and villages.

87 nation’s athletes are competing in Sochi Winter Olympics, 2014. The number of athletes competing in the 2014, Winter Olympic and Paralympic games are 3,500.

1,300 medals are to be awarded in Sochi. This, according to the official Sochi 2014 website, is a record high.

The main design feature is a “Patchwork Quilt”— depicting a mosaic of national designs from the various cultures and ethnic groups that make up the Russian Federation, according to the Sochi Olympics organizing committee.

The design also depicts the varied landscape of Sochi, with the sun’s rays reflecting through a prism of snowy mountain tops onto the beaches of the Black Sea coast.
